Dad is Retiring from Holland Christian

Dan Walcott, our father and grandfather, is retiring from Holland Christian.  Congratulations!  As I stood at the celebration at Holland Christian on Friday, I was struck by God's faithfulness and His Plan.  Yes, I'm of course referring to the career and calling of Mr. Walcott.   Oh, the hearts and minds that were touched by his words, actions, and efforts.  He is soooo good at what he does in the classroom and behind the pulpit.  And he will still continue to do these things, just not everyday in a Holland Christian classroom.  

But there's more to God's Plan and His Faithfulness because I don't think Jon and I would be married if he didn't teach at Holland Christian as well as attend and now preach at Bethany Christian Reformed Church.  God's calling on his life brought about the life I now know into existence. 

 Jon and I were in the same class at Holland Christian (Class of 1997).  We were in Mr. Walcott's Bible class our Junior year.  Ask Jon, he remembers lots of stories.  We were not high school sweet hearts as many incorrectly assume; I don't even think we would have been classified as friends...for real.  We were more accurately just friendly acquaintances. 

 My family did know his family thanks to the Bethany CRC connection because my parents attended there at one time and my extended family still attends there. Truthfully, I'm not sure I would have been interested in Jon if I didn't have his dad as a teacher.  Holland Christian and Bethany CRC were integral in bringing us together!

There are even pictures of me as a young student in Israel with him.  If you would've told me my Junior year of high school...you understand don't you?  Wowsers!!

Now he gets to be my father-in-law and the grandfather to my children.  It's a pretty awesome gig.   Holland Christian is losing you, but we get to keep you and maybe even see more of you.  Blessed beyond measure!

  

Our Ancestors and a Field Trip

In anticipation of Tulip Time, Brighton's Second Grade class did some studying about Holland's History and our Dutch Heritage.  This culminated in a field trip to the Capon House and the Settler's House on Brighton's Birthday.  Jon went as a chaperone.  It was perferct that is was Brighton's birthday, but Jon also distinctly remembers missing this same field trip as a child.  He was sick on that day in third grade, so Jon finally got to go.  

Brighton did need to find out some basic information about his ancestors . He is holding the yellow worksheet that we filled out together with this information in the pic below.  What we discovered is that we are really, really Dutch :)
