We're Takin' It Easy

We're all takin' it easy over here at the Walcott home.  Brighton injured his foot last week jumping off a table - nice.  We watched him with an awful limp for nearly 24 hours, and then we determined we should probably bring him in.  Poor little guy has a pretty bad sprang (thankfully not broken!), and he has been limping something fierce for several days now.  Doctor's orders were to not run or jump for a week.  Umm...have they met my son or I'm guessing any average three year old?  I think it is slowly getting better, and he has been a trooper through the whole thing.

This mama is takin' it easy too.  I had some pregnancy complications a few weeks ago, so I have been instructed to stay home from school and take it easy.  Even though I'm missing my life at school, I'm obviously following doctor's orders. Not exactly how I was thinking this would all work out, but I'm very thankful it's not worse because it very much could be. 

We're all doing fine, we're just not the wicked busy Walcotts you have come to know.  

Make sure you find some time to do some takin' it easy this holiday week.  It really does make you thankful for a brand new set of life's experiences.    

Not Without Bumps

I feel it necessary to clarify my "Back to School 2010" post, as it was in reality not without bumps and in need of some clarification. The transition this school year did go extremely well as I wrote, but we were struggling with something else. It started Thursday, September 2 and is just clearing up now.
Brighton broke out into unexplainable hives - no other symptoms, just really nasty hives. The doctor told us he wasn't contagious, and we wanted to believe him, but he looked just awful. So just to be extra cautious, we kept him home. At the 12 day mark the doctor determined blood work was in order. The picture below is from that day. Jon stayed home from work to take him to the lab where they learned that Bright is double-jointed in his elbows making the blood draw a nightmare in itself (one lab gave up and sent them to another), but they both survived.After bottles of Benadryl, hydrocortisone cream, and then a steroid prescription, it appears that whatever was bugging Bright needed to simply run its course. Weeks of giving this little guy medicine was probably just as bad as the unexplainable hives for two and a half weeks. We have lots of theories on what caused it, but more importantly we are just so thankful that Bright's bumps are behind of us, and we're hoping they stay that way.

Tall & Skinny Again

We did the two year doctor visit yesterday. He has that place figured out: loves it when we get there (trains and fish), but then cries when they call his name. He's tall and skinny again, and doing just fine. Doctor says that you can double his height at this age and get an idea of how tall he would be. Just over six foot seems about right don't you think? He's going to be taller than me someday.
It was also the first time two nurses came in to do his two shots; they meant business. He didn't like that one bit, but then said thank you when they were finished.

Weight: 29 pounds
Height: 36.25 inches

Brighton's 1 1/2 Year Stats

In case you were curious and for documentation's sake...

Brighton James weighs 26 pounds 3 ounces putting him at the 50th percentile for weight.
He is 34.5 inches tall, so he is about at the 90th percentile for height. His head circumference puts him at about the 90th percentile too.

In summary, he is tall, average weight (actually kinda skinny for how tall he is), and he has a big head.

Weight: 23 pounds 11 ounces (60th percentile)

Height: 31 inches (75th percentile)

Head Circumference: 48 centimeters (90th percentile)

9 almost 10

Brighton had his nine month check-up today, but he's really almost 10 months - just one week away. The coolest part of today's doctor's appointment was that there were no shots. Yippee!! That was an unexpected gift for all of us today even though the doctor did tell us they pretty much make up for it when we go up for his one year visit. That's not until after school is out though, and in my mind that seems much more manageable.

We were thinking Bright was slimming down, and we were right. He weighs 22 pounds and is 29 inches putting him around the 60th percentile for height and weight; that's down from the 90th percentile. He only added an inch and about a pound and a half since his last appointment in December. He still eats like a champ, but maybe all the exercise he is getting has something to do with it. He is a hyper-active explorer - into everything! He wobbles around (very close to walking we think) with that large, 90th percentile, simling, and noisy noggin of his.

90th Percentile

Brighton had a doctor's appointment today. He decided he didn't like the doctor before he even had shots. I'm glad he doesn't cry like that daily.

Brighton weighs 18 pounds and is 26.5 inches tall. This puts him in the 90th percentile for height, weight, and head circumference. He's a big boy. We knew that going in, I was waiting for the doctor to say, "He's off the charts."

The doctor told us because Jon and I are both tall that Brighton would always be 75% and up. It makes sense I guess.

He's already in bed for the night, so I'm hoping he sleeps well and handles the shots.

Bright's Stats

Bright had his two month doctor's appointment this week. I was a little nervous that he was going to be huge. In my eyes, he's growing at a rapid rate. He's 13 pounds and 9 ounces. He's 24 inches tall. That puts him in the 75th percentile for weight, height, and head size. Same percentile as his two week appointment. He's growing very well.

And yes, he did get his shots. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be (for either of us). Since we're on the topic I will write that after lots of thought, talking, and research, we have decided to vaccinate Bright according the American Academy of Pediatrics. I'll leave it at that because I know this is a hot topic and some of my readers disagree.

No Lite Bright

We had Brighton's two week doctor's appointment this week. We could really sense that he was putting on weight, so we were surprised when the nurse said he only put on 3 ounces bringing him to 8 lbs. 13 oz. The doctor was surprised too, but also concerned. He decided to weigh him again after he recalibrated the scale. Bright all of sudden weighed 10 lbs. 5 oz. - big difference huh? The funny thing is they have him at a different height too. Only different by a half an inch, but we're choosing to go by what the hospital said when he was born - 22 inches. Brighton is is the 75th percentile for weight, height, and head circumference.

His face is really filling out, and he even has a cute little double chin. I'll try to get some pics of our little chunker (oxymoron...sorry - English teacher, couldn't help it) up this weekend. It's supposed to be beautiful around here. We can't wait. We have stuff planned with both families. Jon says Brighton is a rock star when it comes to our families and friends (right now anyway), and we are his roadies. Pretty accurate analogy I would say, and I wouldn't want to carry gear, support, follow, and absolutely adore anyone else.

Little Stinker Update

I had another ultrasound on Friday, so I took my sister and mom along. We saw what they said was quite a bit of hair, and we watched him suck his thumb - so cute! At one point his thumb fell out of his mouth, and the "Little Stinker" did not like that. His head and hands were moving back and forth quite a bit until he was back at it again. We saw this all on an ultrasound, and I felt it too. Technology is amazing!

According to the baby size equation that doctors use, he already weighs approximately 7 pounds and 7 ounces. I hear that babies at this stage gain about an ounce a day. I think he should join us sooner rather than later don't you?

My doctor also told me that he wouldn't let me go past my due date. That was exciting news. I have a good friend that went 18 days past hers. It's comforting to know that is out of the equation for me. That means he'll be here sometime in the next 3 1/2 weeks!

Everyone is asking us, "Are you ready?" The answer is almost. We'd be thrilled if he would show up tonight. We're ready in that sense. Jon is excited, but I sense he is getting a bit anxious about the actually day or night when it's time. I'm doing okay in that department, but I'm not ready at school. I'm scheduled to work the next two weeks yet (9.5 days!), but I am going to attempt to have everything ready and waiting for a sub in the next few days just in case. This is no small task, but I'm almost there. Ideally, I'd like to meet with the sub, but they haven't found one yet. It's nice to know I'm not that easy to replace. The administration has been telling me not to worry about it, but now they seem to be scrambling. Oh well. My kids will survive, and pretty soon I really won't be worrying about it at all.
